Information on the case from local sources, may or may not be correct : Wiles was last seen in Humphreys County, Tennessee on February 7, 2019. He purchased a 1998 Buick that day and spent the afternoon showing it to his friend around town. While he was driving home that evening, at about 8:00 p.m., the Buick broke down in stormy weather in the 8200 block of Old Highway 13. He went to a nearby house and used their phone to call his girlfriend and ask for a ride. She had been drinking, however, and didn't feel she could drive safely.
Wiles thanked the resident whose phone he'd borrowed, and was last seen walking back to his car in the rain. He has never been heard from again. His girlfriend began driving around looking for him the next day, and when she couldn't find him she filed a missing persons report. Severe storms had hit the area and there was flooding. An extensive search of the area turned up no indication of his whereabouts.
Wiles had told his girlfriend he had a flat tire, but when the police located the vehicle none of the tires were flat. It was almost entirely out of gas, however, and probably could not have driven. Since he grew up in the area and was very familiar with it, authorities don't believe he would have gotten lost. They think he probably tried to seek shelter from the weather and then something happened to him.
Although he had a history of substance abuse, Wiles had turned his life around in the year prior to his disappearance. He had gotten clean, joined Alcoholics Anonymous and gotten a steady job. The circumstances of his disappearance are unclear.

September 2021 updates and sources

A missing person is a person who has disappeared and whose status as alive or dead cannot be confirmed as their location and condition are not known. A person may go missing through a voluntary disappearance, or else due to an accident, crime, death in a location where they cannot be found (such as at sea), or many other reasons. In most parts of the world, a missing person will usually be found quickly. While criminal abductions are some of the most widely reported missing person cases, these account for only 25% of missing children in Europe. By contrast, some missing person cases remain unresolved for many years. Laws related to these cases are often complex since, in many jurisdictions, relatives and third parties may not deal with a person's assets until their death is considered proven by law and a formal death certificate issued. The situation, uncertainties, and lack of closure or a funeral resulting when a person goes missing may be extremely painful with long-lasting effects on family and friends. Several organizations seek to connect, share best practices, and disseminate information and imAge at the time of disappearance: s of missing children to improve the effectiveness of missing children investigations, including the International Commission on Missing Persons, the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children (ICMEC), as well as national organizations, including the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in the US, Missing People in the UK, Child Focus in Belgium, and The Smile of the Child in Greece.
